With the year coming to a close, many are reflecting back on 2021 and looking ahead to 2022—including the Pantone Color Institute, a global authority when it comes to color in the design industry. Pantone recently announced their Color of the Year 2022: Very Perri.
The color of the year, for the first time ever, was actually created by Pantone’s color specialists and consists of periwinkle blue with undertones of red violet. The specialists chose to work within the “blue family” because they felt many people like and feel comfortable with it. In these transforming times, they wanted to create a color to showcase creativity and evoke new perspectives and possibilities for the future.
“As society continues to recognize color as a critical form of communication and as a way to express and effect ideas and emotions and engage and connect, the complexity of this new red-violet-infused blue hue highlights the expansive possibilities that lie before us,” Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute, said in a press release.
Along with the Pantone Color Institute, Shutterstock also announced its predictions for the color trends of 2022. They believe the emphasis in the coming year will be on finding serenity. The brand picked Calming Coral, a muted peach pastel; Velvet Violet , a bold and eye-catching, yet elegant purple; and Pacific Pink, a muted and rosy pink that’s reminiscent of a blush. Plus, using their AI technology to look back, Shutterstock found green to be most popularly used in 2021.
