Just so you know, What to Expect may earn commissions from the shopping links included on this page. All sales and prices are accurate at the time of publishing.

Moms constantly have to stay on their toes — in more ways than one — and there’s one product at Target that’s keeping them comfortable while they do it: the Persephone sneakers. The newest item from Universal Thread, moms say the sneakers guarantee support and a high-quality feel for only $43. They’re so comfy, in fact, that some are hailing it as the perfect shoe for a full day at Disneyland or Disney World.

The secret behind these kicks? The memory foam insoles, which provide a cushy feel that’ll keep your feeling good for hours on end. Here are a few of the standout (and yes, Disney-related) reviews from people who have tested them out:

“Literally most comfortable shoe I’ve ever worn. Wore these for an entire day at Disneyland and felt fine! I’ve been wearing these for months and they still are so comfortable.”

“I walked around Disney World for 12 hours and my feet felt great. And my bunions didn’t act up at all, for those with foot pain.”

“I love these! So comfortable! I have repurchased the white. Also got brown and black! I have my eye on blue & beige. They’re so comfortable, I’ve worn them to Disneyland all day. The only issue which isn’t that big a deal is that the laces regularly come untied. I just tie those bunny ears again so they don’t untie! I’m in between sizes and was able to size down. Also I have a wider foot and they are not too tight”

People were also impressed by the woven detailing on the shoe, which one reviewer said, “Totally gives Chloe vibes without the 850 dollar price tag.” Who would say no to a designer dupe, especially at this price?

It comes in six colors, but two styles are already sold out online, so other styles will likely be unavailable soon.

March coming to a close brings us and our winter-weary brains one month closer to summer — and the shopping habits of What to Expect readers followed suit. Our community of moms and moms-to-be spent the past month stocking up for summer with cartfuls of baby-safe sunscreen, wildly popular postpartum swimwear and very flattering maternity dresses hiding at Target.

Of course, it wasn’t all about fun in the sun. The top-bought roster also featured several trusty, cross-seasonal items that focused on making pregnancy more comfortable and breastfeeding easier. How do we know? We analyzed internal (anonymous) shopping data to determine which items WTE readers purchased the most in March.

From an award-winning pregnancy pillow to a comfortable two-in-one bra, here are the top 10 items parents like you couldn’t stop adding to cart last month.

Moms’ favorite baby-safe sunscreen

Deemed the Best Baby Sunscreen by dermatologists and What to Expect staff members, Thinkbaby SPF 50+ sunscreen is a summer must-have. The mineral sunscreen uses zinc oxide to block 98 percent of UVB rays. And because it’s free from oxybenzone, parabens and phthalates, you don’t have to worry about any “junk” coming into contact with your baby’s sensitive skin. Regarding the texture, What to Expect parents say it’s “silky” and “easy to rub on,” which is a huge plus if you’re dealing with a wiggly baby.

What to Expect Moms stocked up on Thinkbaby sunscreen during the Amazon Big Spring Sale when it was 40% off. Fortunately, the deal is still on, so you can grab a tube (or 10) for $9 each.

An award-winning pregnancy pillow

We’re not joking when we say the Pharmedoc pregnancy pillow is an award-winner: Our community members voted it Best Pregnancy Pillow in the What to Expect Sleep Awards two years in a row. (Not to mention, our staff has also crowned it the Best Pregnancy Pillow.) The U-shape pillow receives constant praise for making side-sleeping easier during pregnancy — especially for typically back- and front-sleepers. The firm, but forgiving filling better supports your belly, back, knees, neck and hips, alleviating the pregnancy pains that keep you up at night. Though some may find it large, there’s a detachable “leg” that you can remove to save on space.

The pillow was 36% off during the Amazon Big Spring Sale. Though the discount isn’t as deep, it’s currently still on sale for 23% off — meaning you’ll save $15.

The only swimsuit postpartum moms want to wear

The Kona Sol one-piece caught our attention after seeing several moms credit the suit for giving them an extra boost of body confidence. “This is my first summer postpartum and I was so nervous about finding a swimsuit that would make me feel confident but this has delivered,” one mom wrote, with several others agreeing. The side ruching gives the suit a little extra stretch, which is helpful as your body continues to change postpartum. Meanwhile, the cups have padding for extra bust support and can be moved aside for easier nursing. We also love that the scallop neckline adds some extra style.

An easy-to-clean teether

Even though we highlighted Infantino’s carrot teether as an Easter basket filler, it’s a great purchase no matter the time of year. Made of BPA-free silicone, the teether provides a soft biting experience to help soothe baby’s gum pain. (There’s even a textured section for extra relief!) Yet it’s durable enough that your child won’t chew through it. The handles make it easy for even the smallest hands to hold without assistance, freeing your hands to deal with other tasks. And because it doesn’t have a ton of nooks and crannies, you can easily wipe it clean with a cloth.

The most popular (and supportive) belly band

Some bad news: A lot of moms-to-be experience pregnancy pains thanks to that beloved bump. The good news: Many find relief with the help of the Azmed Maternity Belly Band. What to Expect moms deem this the best belly band, saying it’s easy to put on and take off thanks to a singular Velcro fastener. And, most importantly, they praise the wraparound band for providing “superior comfort” and “instant relief.” And if you act fast, you might be able to snag it for 23% off, knocking the price from $31 to $24.

The must-have maternity dress of the summer

It can be hard to rationalize spending money on maternity clothes, but moms said they were happy to put their money towards the new Ingrid & Isabel dress at Target. (Granted, it’s under $40, so you won’t be breaking the bank!) It’s the type of all-in-one dress you want when it’s hot out — especially when you’re pregnant and just want something to throw on. Made of stretchy polyester and Spandex, it’ll grow with you and your bump. Bonus: There’s a pair of built-in shorts to prevent dreaded summer chafing.

A hospital-grade wearable breast pump

More and more brands are introducing wearable breast pumps, but the Elvie Stride Wireless Breast Pump remains a favorite among What to Expect staff and community members. (So much so, we deemed it the Best Wearable Breast Pump.) Moms love that the pump provides hospital-grade power without needing power from an outlet. What to Expect moms also appreciate that the Elvie Stride is quiet, especially compared to other breast pumps, and can be easily operated via an app. Bonus: It’s currently 22% off!

Kindred Bravely is synonymous with comfort and convenience, which is probably why it was voted the Best Nursing Bra Brand in the What to Expect Feeding Awards. And although all of the Kindred Bravely bras are great, we’ve named the Kindred Bravely Sublime Hands-Free Pumping and Nursing Bra the Best Nursing Bra. Made of ultra-stretchy nylon and Spandex, this bra has two layers of fabric: One that pulls down to reveal horizontal slits that hold pump flanges in place, and a second that exposes the whole breast for direct feeding, so you can wear it while pumping or nursing. In addition to the genius design, we love that Kindred Bravely has a relatively expansive size range: up to 3X and cups up to H. (Psst, right now you get this bra for 20% off with the code GETPUMPED!)

Halo’s SleepSack has won both a What to Expect Sleep Award and What to Expect Mom Must-Have Award because, well, it’s the best sleep sack; it keeps baby cozy and gives parents peace of mind that their child won’t overheat. New parents especially appreciate how easy it is to use: Rather than being secured with crinkly Velcro or hard-to-use snaps, Halo has a two-way zipper. (this also makes diaper changes easy!) It comes in an array of fabrics, so you can find the one that works for your climate: the 100% cotton sleep sack can be used year-round, while the fleece option is great for winter use.

We love pieces that can transition from maternity wear to postpartum wear and beyond, which makes this SKIMS bralette an absolute winner. It’s one of our favorite maternity bras for a straightforward option that’s just downright comfortable. Plus, it ranges in sizes from XXS to 4X, which is more expensive than many other brands. WTE moms say they love it for being extra comfy, thanks to its underwire-free design. But you don’t have to sacrifice shape for comfort: The elastic band under the bra provides some lift and the smooth band gives shape without restricting. You’ll wear it well past your postpartum days, too!

If you’re a mom (or just a human who’s been hungry), you know how quickly a tantrum can arise if a snack is requested but not available. This is why many moms have started stashing snack boxes — food containers with multiple compartments — in their diaper bags and cars. And, of course, Target’s $5 Figmint Bento Box is the most popular option. So much so that we haven’t been able to find it … until now.

Influencer @targetchaos was the first to spot the box back on shelves at her local store — and it’s currently selling out online. Made with BPA-free plastic, the box has two different compartments making it easy to store a sandwich and side of fruit, or a large serving of snack mix and veggies. And, like all Figment boxes, it’s dishwasher- and microwave-safe.

“Really nice for separating snacks and packing meals for my toddler,” writes one mom. “Works great.”

“I use it for my toddlers’ snacks,” shares another mom. “Easy to clean and put in my bag.”

There’s also a new large box comprising eight different compartments: two large (ideal for two sandwich halves), two medium and four small.

The large “snacklebox” has already received a positive review, too, with one mom sharing, “Loved the different size spots for different shapes and portion snacks!”

The eight-compartment design is the newest iteration of Figmint’s bento boxes, a lineup that also includes a four-compartment option that, at the time of publishing, is out of stock everywhere. We’re anticipating that the two-compartment box will also sell out (and fast!), so whether you have a trip coming up or just want snacks at the ready, this is one Target drop you don’t want to miss.

Just so you know, What to Expect may earn commissions from the shopping links included on this page. All sales, prices and information are accurate at the time of publishing.

Like several other baby registries, Babylist offers a welcome box that introduces parents to just a sampling of the many baby brands available. Although the welcome box isn’t free, many parents say the quality samples and multiple coupons make it worth shelling out the small shipping fee.

In addition to a shipping fee, Babylist has a few other requirements you must fulfill in order to claim your Hello Baby Box. Below, we explain how to get your Babylist welcome box.

How to get your Babylist baby registry welcome box

Start a Babylist baby registry. This is a fairly straightforward process, in which you share some basic information, like your name and your due date. You’ll also need to share your shipping address so Babylist knows where to send the Hello Baby Box (as well as any purchased gifts).

Add at least 30 items from the Babylist registry checklist to your registry. When you start your registry, Babylist sends a list of recommended items that (hopefully) make life a little easier once baby arrives.

Add at least three items from the Babylist Shop to your registry. The Babylist Shop sells thousands of items from popular brands like UppaBaby, Lovevery and FridaBaby. These items can come from the checklist so you can accomplish two tasks at once.

Add at least three items from other stores to your registry. The beauty of a universal registry is that you can add items from other retailers, whether it’s a big-box store like Amazon or small shops on Etsy. Again, if you add items from the checklist, you’re checking off two tasks at once.

Make a minimum purchase of $30 from the Babylist Shop. If you want your Hello Baby Box now, then you can make the purchase yourself. But if you have some patience, you can wait for someone else to buy a gift. Once this purchase has been made, you — and only you — can add the Hello Baby Box to your cart.

Verify your address and pay $8.95 for shipping. You may also have to pay a small tax fee, depending on your location. (And if you live in Hawaii or Alaska, you are subject to a shipping surcharge.) Note that only customers in the continental U.S. can receive the box.

Babylist doesn’t share what’s in their welcome box, mainly because the items vary based on availability and popularity. But What to Expect community members have shared the contents of their Hello Baby Box, with many saying their box contained:

A bodysuit

A bottle

A pacifier

A bib

A sample pack of diapers

Travel-size baby lotion and shampoo

Some coupons

Some moms also said they received diaper cream, hats, mittens and even hydration packs. Though it might not seem like a huge haul, many What to Expect community members say the Hello Baby Box is worth the $8.95 shipping fee; not only do some of these items make for great diaper bag fillers, but they allow you to test products and brands before you buy them. After all, not all babies like the same items.

Once you’ve set up your Babylist baby registry and ordered your welcome box, don’t forget to link your Babylist registry to our Registry Builder so that you can manage all of your registries in one place for easy sharing.

As a parent, you only want the very best for your child, especially when it comes to the foods she eats. So it’s understandable that you may be concerned about heavy metals like arsenic, lead, cadmium and mercury in your baby’s food.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has launched an initiative, called Closer to Zero, focused on reducing children’s exposure to heavy metals in food, after several studies and reports found elevated levels of heavy metals in store-bought baby food.

Is heavy metal in your baby’s food really something to worry about? Here’s what pediatricians have to say.

Should parents be worried about metals in the baby food they buy?

The headlines sound scary, but try not to worry, pediatricians say. While these findings do highlight the need for some stricter regulations in the industry, most store-bought baby food is still perfectly safe and healthy.

“The key is really not to panic, as this is really nothing new,” says Lauren Crosby, M.D., F.A.A.P, a pediatrician in Beverly Hills, California, and member of the What to Expect Medical Review Board. “These are chemicals that are found naturally occurring in our environment, so it’s impossible to completely avoid them. The levels are still low levels.”

In other words, while it is disconcerting to imagine arsenic in your little one’s food, because these metals are naturally present in the food supply (such as in water and soil), your child would be exposed even if you exclusively served her homemade or all-organic fare.

“A root vegetable, like a sweet potato, [grows] in the ground,” says Gina Posner, M.D., a pediatrician at MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center in Fountain Valley, California. “So even if you’re getting your own sweet potato, it’s still going to have higher levels [of these metals]. It’s not that store-bought is anything different. It’s just that those vegetables … tend to have higher levels of chemicals.”

What can parents do to keep their children safe?

Even though these heavy metals exist naturally in the food supply, there are steps you can take to reduce the amount of exposure your child has:

Eat a healthy, varied diet. Root vegetables like sweet potatoes and carrots are packed with nutrition, but because they grow in soil, they may also contain higher levels of these substances. Feed your child a variety of fruits and vegetables (think leafy greens, fresh berries and creamy avocado in addition to her favorite root veggies).

Limit the amount of rice on the menu. Rice products have tested higher for arsenic. Avoiding or limiting foods like rice cereal and teething biscuits made with rice can help lower your baby’s exposure.

When in doubt, ask your pediatrician. If you’re confused about the best options for your child, “ask, ask, ask,” your pediatrician, advises Ilan Shapiro, M.D., F.A.A.P., medical director of health education and wellness at AltaMed Health Services. Dr. Shapiro recommends parents stay up-to-date on the latest findings and educate themselves on the amount of chemicals in different products if they’re able to.

Is store-bought baby food still safe?

Store-bought baby food is still safe, so don’t be scared away from buying it. Making the switch from store-bought purées (which can be a big time-saver for busy parents!) to homemade baby food won’t wipe out the substances in question from your little one’s diet.

“It has nothing to do with making your own baby food or buying organic, because these heavy metals are in the food supply,” Dr. Crosby says.

The bottom line? “We need to figure out how to clean up our environment so that there aren’t all these chemicals being leached into our foods,” Dr. Posner says.“But the reality is, you know, if you cook your own versus buying it from the store, it’s not that they’re adding lead or arsenic into it — it’s just [that] those vegetables tend to have higher levels because of how they’re grown.”

In the meantime, you can rest assured that buying baby food from the store and feeding it to your little one is generally very safe.

“There are baseline levels of heavy metals in all foods, yet the vast majority of our children remain perfectly healthy,” says Marvin Resmovits, M.D., a board-certified pediatrician at Kidz Kare of Great Neck, a division of Prohealthcare, in Great Neck, New York, and member of the What to Expect Medical Review Board.

Although Amazon Prime Day won’t start until July 11, another shopping event is here to help you save money: Target Circle Week. Starting today and ending Saturday, July 15, Target Circle Week is a good time for moms to stock up on everyday essentials and make big-ticket purchases without breaking the bank. But it’s also a chance for moms to buy something for themselves, be it a vacuum that cuts down on cleaning time, patio furniture for our an outdoor sanctuary, or some new clothes from top-brands. And some of the best Target Circle Week deals rival some early sales we’ve spotted for Prime Day and Walmart Plus Week. (Oh, did we forget to mention there is a third sale happening this week?)

In order to take advantage of Target Circle Week’s deals, you must be a member of the Target Circle loyalty program. If you’re moaning at the thought of paying for another retailer program, you’ll be happy to hear that it’s free to join Target Circle. (Not to mention joining gives you access to exclusive deals throughout the year and allows you to earn points to use towards future purchases, making your dollar go even further.) But even if it weren’t, the expected savings from Target Circle Week would be worth it. According to Target, shoppers will see discounts of up to 50 percent in stores and online.

With Target Circle Week overlapping with Prime Day and Walmart Plus Week, you may find it difficult to track all the deals at both retailers — but What to Expect is here to help. Below are the best Target Circle Week deals for moms. And since the discounts will definately change during this seven-day sale, be sure to bookmark this page and check back regularly for Target Circle Week deal updates.

When I was pregnant with my son, the number of clothing items I actually enjoyed wearing dwindled by the day. By my third trimester, I was testing the limits (and seams) of my favorite pieces. Looking back, I should have stocked up on the dresses from Universal Thread at Target, especially after seeing their new releases, which includes the non-maternity maternity dress for spring — and it’s only $25.

The short-sleeve mini skater dress is made from a lightweight linen and rayon fabric, so it’ll keep you cool during the summer heat and grow with your body. Not to mention, the A-line cut means you have more room in the midsection and legs. It comes in six different colors and patterns, and it’s available in sizes XS to 4X … but it’s already selling out. That’s probably because of all of the five-star reviews it’s received, including high marks from moms-to-be.

“This dress is SO cute!” says one mom. “I’m pregnant and starting to show, but not enough that I feel confident wearing tighter, form fitting styles. I picked this up in size small in the coral and medium in the black (my store didn’t have small) and they’re both amazing! The fit is so comfortable and flowy – this is the first outfit I’ve felt confident in since pre-pregnancy. The length is good for me (I’m 5’4”) and it’s slightly longer in the back. I’m excited to wear these throughout the spring and summer as my bump grows!”

“This is beautiful,” writes another mom. “I got this for Easter this year, I got size Medium and I’m 5’1 (weigh180 I’m pregnant and I love it).”

Because of the roomy design, this dress can accommodate your bump before, during and after you’ve welcomed your little one. So, think of it as an investment for now and later. Trust me, those postpartum days will call for confidence-boosting, breezy, loose-fitting items you can dress up or down. Because of the price point and low-in-stock warnings, we don’t anticipate this Target-exclusive item will be there for long, so be sure to snag it while you still can.

Just so you know, What to Expect may earn commissions from the shopping links included on this page. All sales and prices are accurate at the time of publishing.

I wore my Stars Above pajamas daily after giving birth; four months later, I still reach for this set as my go-to for comfy sleepwear. And though I don’t need another pair of pajamas, the Target-exclusive brand recently dropped a new satin pair that I may have to get my hands on ASAP.

Like the OG pajamas, the satin pajama set isn’t specifically made for postpartum, but the button-down top is a must for easier nursing at night … and during the day (because who’s changing out of PJs in the fourth trimester?). They also feature a drawstring waist, which makes it easy to adjust the fit of the shorts as your body grows. And, as the name suggests, the new pajamas are made of silky-soft satin fabric that would make you think they cost $100. But in reality, they’re only $25.

I was first introduced to the Stars Above PJs when my best friend ordered them for all of her bridesmaids, but they quickly became my go-to during and after pregnancy. But you don’t need to rely on my words alone; the ultra-soft pair I have is backed by more than 1,700 five-star reviews, and the new satin set already has a growing fanbase.

“Just got these in the mail and tried them on,” shares one happy customer. “They are sooo comfortable and so cute. I’m obsessed. I haven’t washed yet, but cold gentle cycle in a garment bag should do the trick. I am usually a medium/large on top and medium/small bottoms, so I was worried the chest would be too tight or bottoms would be too big for the medium but both are perfect and roomy. Get it if you’re thinking about it!”

These luxe PJs are offered in four different colors, including a classic navy with white trim and pink with white stripes. Sizing is available in XS to 4X in most styles, but some have already sold out. So, if you’re ready to make postpartum just a little more luxe, don’t skip out on this set.

Every birth story is unique. In our series, “My Birth Story,” we’ve asked moms from all over the world to share their experiences of how they welcomed their little ones into the world. Here, you’ll find a range of stories, from moms who delivered vaginally or via C-section, alone or surrounded by family, even some moms who gave birth in under an hour. Their perspectives may all be different — but each one powerfully illustrates the emotion and beauty of giving birth.

I have big babies. Giant, even. My second son was 10 pounds, 14 ounces, and was a week early. So when I got pregnant with my third son, I decided to ask for an induction two weeks before my due date, on the grounds that my nethers couldn’t take anything bigger than the turkey I’d birthed prior. Unfortunately, as we’d just moved states, my new doctor refused my request, saying that since he hadn’t treated me before and I was already eight months along, he didn’t feel comfortable inducing me.

I made it to my due date. During a heat wave in Minneapolis. In August. I ate popsicles by the box, shoved bags of frozen veggies down my shirt, and fended off questions from strangers asking if I was having triplets (no) and if I was as uncomfortable as I looked (yes x 10). And then I sailed right past my due date. Surely the doctor would let me out of my misery now? Nope. He insisted that there was no real reason for an induction and he preferred “to let Mother Nature take her course.” You know, the same Mother Nature that makes poison dart frogs and hemlock.

Nature finally made her move nine days after my due date and I went into labor. As soon as I felt the familiar pains — this was my fourth delivery — I grabbed my bag and headed to the hospital, calling my doctor on the way. At the hospital, the nurses told me that my doctor had said I couldn’t possibly be in active labor yet and to send me home to wait a little longer.

“Oh, I am very much in labor,” I said through gritted teeth.

“You’re supposed to go to his office in a bit and he’ll check you there,” the nurse replied.

“I’m not leaving.”

“You’re not supposed to stay.”

My husband looked nervously between the nurse and me, his super pregnant and increasingly angry wife.

“Why don’t you just go to his office first, I’ll call him and tell him you’re coming,” she finally said.

“I won’t make it,” I growled. And then I did what any woman who was so pregnant that she was standing in bare feet because not even flip flops would fit her swollen feet anymore would do — I sat down on the floor and burst into hysterical tears. Between sobs I informed everyone that I was not leaving this hospital until I had this baby and if that happened to be on the floor right here then so be it.

Then I puked all over the hospital floor.

Here’s a fun fact about me: Right when I start hitting the transition phase of labor — the horrifically painful part where you switch from dilating to being ready to push — I always throw up. My husband, recognizing this telltale sign, started yelling at random passerby to deliver my baby. (I mean, he almost fainted during our first birth so it’s not like he was going to do it.) One lady in the gift shop looked like she might even take him up on the offer.

I don’t know if it was my vomit or his hysterics but the nurses finally decided to take me up to labor and delivery. Once up there I knew I was in safe hands — those ladies know their business. There was no messing around, and I was promptly put in a hospital gown and on a bed. I had not stopped crying but at least I didn’t think I was going to die anymore. One nurse asked me if I wanted an epidural and a second one snapped, in a beautiful, lilting accent, that it was clearly too late for that. She hadn’t even introduced herself to my cervix yet but apparently she could tell by my screaming and clawing at the bed that I’d passed the point where drugs would be of any use.

“I need to puuuuuush!” I yelled.

The second nurse commanded everyone out of the way just in time to catch my son. I hadn’t even intended to push yet but he just flew out. It was 45 minutes since we’d pulled up to the hospital and less than ten minutes since we’d been in the delivery room. A doctor I’d never met before arrived just in time to deliver my placenta.

By the time my doctor strolled in, that amazing nurse had already cut the cord, cleaned the baby off, taken his vitals, wrapped him up, handed my 10-and-a-half pound son to me, and was helping me nurse — a solid hour after all the action had happened. When he did finally come, he didn’t even acknowledge the fact that he had nearly made me into one of those news stories about a lady delivering her baby in a car on the highway.

Being born so quickly had an unexpected side effect, however. Apparently spending time in the birth canal, getting squeezed by contraction after contraction, has a purpose, beyond giving babies that lovely conehead look. All the squeezing wrings the fluid out of their stomach and lungs. Since my son missed out on that fun, he started choking and barfing up what seemed like gallons of liquid. They ended up taking him to the NICU for a few hours, just to make sure he’d gotten it all out of his lungs. I realized that had he actually been born in the car, things might have gone very badly for him, and I was even more grateful I’d ignored my doctor and thrown my adult tantrum in the triage area.

When people hear I delivered a baby in under an hour, the most common reaction is one of awe and even envy. (Well, from women. Most men don’t seem to want to hear my labor stories for some reason.) But the truth is that out of all five of my deliveries, his was the most frightening because it was so fast. It was just as painful as my “normal” births, but I had less time to prepare for the pain. I wasn’t sure what was happening and because my doctor and I weren’t on the same page, I felt like I couldn’t trust my own body. Even the aftermath was scary, with the trip to the NICU. Ultimately, everything turned out just fine, but the moral of this story is that when it comes to delivering a baby, maybe you should trust the lady actually carrying said baby.

On May 2, 2022, the internet was set ablaze by a leaked draft Supreme Court majority opinion indicating that Roe v. Wade—the landmark 1973 Supreme Court decision that ruled that people in the Unite States have the consitutional right to obtain an abortion before fetal viability —may be overturned. Abortion rights are a politically fraught topic, to be sure, but the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG), the governing medical organization for board-certified ob-gyns in the United States, has a clear stance on the issue.

“Induced abortion is an essential component to women’s health care,” its policy reads. “Like all medical matters, decisions regarding abortion should be made by patients in consultation with their health care providers and without undue interference by outside parties. Like all patients, women obtaining abortion are entitled to privacy, dignity, respect and support.”

So if legal access to abortion is critical to women’s health, what are the health implications of potentially overturning Roe v. Wade? Here, three ob-gyns provide answers to pressing questions around unintended pregnancy, abortion safety and considerations, and how anti-abortion laws affect maternal health.

What are the biggest maternal health risks of overturning Roe v. Wade?

Experts point to a number of factors at play here. Firstly, the overturning of Roe v. Wade could potentially worsen the US maternal mortality rate, which is already the highest among developed countries. “Currently, there are about 700 pregnancy-related deaths a year, and 60 percent of these deaths are preventable,” says Sherry Ross, MD, a women’s sexual health expert and author of she-ology and the she-quel. “For now, it’s safe to get an abortion in the US. If the number of abortions go down as a result of Roe being overturned, the number of pregnancies [carried to term] will go up, and the death rate for women could rise.”

Doctors also worry that banning abortions will simply lead to a spike in illegally sought abortions outside of a medical setting, putting women’s health at risk. “People will seek abortion care regardless of whether it’s legal or not,” says Sara Twogood, MD, an ob-gyn at Ceders Sinai in Los Angeles. “Limiting access to care doesn’t decrease the number of abortions—it decreases the number of safe abortions.”

It’s a reality proven by past history. According to the Guttmacher Institute, in 1965 (before Roe v. Wade), illegal abortion accounted for 17 percent of all pregnancy-related deaths. Not only were illegal abortions unsafe, but they were widespread: The Guttmacher Institute estimates the number of illegal abortions in the 1960s ranged anywhere from 200,000 to 1.2 millon a year. “For women experiencing unplanned pregnancy, limited access to abortion can literally be a death sentance,” says Kameelah Phillips, MD, an ob-gyn and founder of Calla Women’s Health in New York City. “In a country with already appalling maternal health statistics, the US has no room for damning more women to maternal-related deaths.”

The health implications of denied access to abortion are far-reaching, including “the social, psychological and economic consequences of unplanned pregnancy,” Phillips says. “These include the limits on education and job opportunities that contribute to the ongoing cycle of poverty and pay inequality.” Not only that, but according to ACOG, more than 320,000 women are abused by their partners during pregnancy each year. “Unplanned pregnancy increases these risks,” Phillips adds. “Unplanned pregnancy presents a myriad of health risks for women.”

How might an unwanted pregnancy affect a mother’s health in the short and long term?

Carrying an unwanted pregnancy has been shown to have consequences for the mom’s physical and mental health. “An unwanted pregnancy can, in the short term, worsen or cause depression, anxiety or other mood disorders; and lead to less consistent prenatal care, poor maternal weight gain, more fetal and maternal complications during the pregnancy and an increased risk of postpartum depression,” Ross says. “The mother is also at risk of being physically abused, and her relationship with her partner (if she has one) is less likely to be successful.”

There have been numerous research studies on this issue. A 2017 study examined the mental health impacts of an unintended pregnancy on mothers and found that women who experienced an unplanned pregnancy were 1.73 times more likely to exhibit signs of postpartum depression nine months after birth as compared to women with planned pregnancies. There are long-term implications as well: A 2016 report published the findings of a 60-year ongoing survey of women who were pregnant before the legalization of abortion, and found that unwanted pregnancies that resulted in live births were strongly associated with poorer mental health outcomes later in life.

There may also be health implications for the child. “Babies [may be] smaller at birth and more likely to die in the first year of life,” Ross says. As for long-term issues, “they are more likely to be abused, neglected and not receive proper medical care for a healthy development during childhood,” she adds. A 2019 study published in the Journal of Pediatrics found that children of women who were denied abortions had lower child development scores and were more likely to live below the federal poverty level than the existing children of women who successfully obtained an abortion.

What are the potential health risks and key considerations associated with terminating a pregnancy?

“When termination is done under the care of trained professionals and in a timely fashion, it is a safe procedure,” Phillips says. “Procedures that are performed earlier in the pregnancy are typically shorter and safer.” How far along a woman is in her pregnancy will impact potential health risks associated with an abortion, as well as the way a pregnancy is terminated and the experience of the physician who is performing the termination, according to Ross.

There are two types of abortion: surgical abortion and mediation abortion, which involves taking oral pills; one type may be recommended or specifically not recommended for an individual patient, according to Twogood, so the termination method should always be discussed with a physician. “Bleeding, infection and retained products of conception are all risks of both types of termination,” she says.

How does the safety of a legally sanctioned abortion compare to an illegal abortion?

“Legal abortion is a safe medical procedure—full stop,” Phillips says. “It is likely one of the safest procedures that can be performed. Termination does not lead to infertility, mental illness or any other chronic issue.” Rather, legal abortions provide safe medication monitoring, sterile instruments if needed and follow-up care, Twogood explains.

On the flip side, illegal abortions increases the risk of complications. “We know from our history that illegal abortion is unsafe,” Phillips says. “When termination is driven underground or performed by unskilled, non-medical individuals, then it [poses] a risk of serious bleeding, damage to internal organs, loss of fertility and death.”

Phillips remembers an encounter with an older woman who had had an illegal abortion in the 1950s. “She recalled the dark basement, the other scared women sitting around, the pain and blood. It was literally out of a movie scene. As I sat there in silence, I realized everything that I had read about ‘back-alley abortions’ was in fact true,” Phillips says. “As a result of this illegal procedure, she sustained multiple intestinal and uterine injuries. She lost half her blood and had major surgery to correct the holes in her intestines. She lost her uterus and fertility because of an anti-abortion climate that drove her to these lengths. This illegal procedure changed her life forever, both mentally and physically. This should never happen to another woman.”

What are the health implications of removing women from the decision-making process around reproduction?

As Ross points out, 51 percent of pregnancies are unplanned, and the decision to have a child has “life-changing implications” for a mother and her partner (if she has one). All of the doctors we spoke with underscored the importance of women retaining complete control over their personal health care and reproductive rights.

“Women uniquely know what is best for them, and (attempting) to remove them from this conversation represents an effort to undermine a woman’s autonomy over her body and uphold this country’s long-held inequalities,” Phillips says. “Anti-abortion laws serve to uphold the patriarchy, reinforce poverty and keep education out of reach, and are an assault on the female body. These laws punish women for their biology and abdicate men from their responsibility in this matter.” Furthermore, “in a country that does not provide pay equality, universal health care, paid family leave and other such rights, only the individual is aware of what they need to do to create the life they want and desire.”
